An exhilarating, splendidly illustrated, entirely new look at the history of baseball: told through the stories of the vibrant and ever-changing ballparks where the game was and is staged, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning architectural critic.

From the earliest corrals of the mid-1800s (Union Grounds in Brooklyn was a "saloon in the open air"), to the much mourned parks of the early 1900s (Detroit's Tiger Stadium, Cincinnati's Palace of the Fans), to the stadiums we fill today, Paul Goldberger makes clear the inextricable bond between the American city and America's favorite pastime. In the changing locations and architecture of our ballparks, Goldberger reveals the manifestations of a changing society: the earliest ballparks evoked the Victorian age in their accommodations--bleachers for the riffraff, grandstands for the middle-class; the "concrete donuts" of the 1950s and '60s made plain television's grip on the public's attention; and more recent ballparks, like Baltimore's Camden Yards, signal a new way forward for stadium design and for baseball's role in urban development. Throughout, Goldberger shows us the way in which baseball's history is concurrent with our cultural history: the rise of urban parks and public transportation; the development of new building materials and engineering and design skills. And how the site details and the requirements of the game--the diamond, the outfields, the walls, the grandstands--shaped our most beloved ballparks.

A fascinating, exuberant ode to the Edens at the heart of our cities--where dreams are as limitless as the outfields.

oh wow
Format: Kindle
I just knew there was something about Cooper! I’m wondering if he’s about to be included but damn I’m glad he’s at least not a rapist and creepy guy, he just got called on assignment and had to go! This should be interesting! She’s gonna run and then what’s his face is gonna grab her. I’m worried! Wow that was a great book and cliffhanger! Loving this!

very cute!
Format: Kindle
This is my first read from this author. The story was very cute with some angsty moments. I loved the way the different MMCs helped the FMC as she recovered from the trauma she endured. It was a great way to highlight their personalities!

Touching OV
Format: Kindle
Really wonderful book. It starts heavy, and slowly lightens up. Some reviews have talked about the FMC not reacting to trauma in a believable way, but her boundless optimism was what she turns to. There is no one, correct way of dealing with trauma, so it didn't come off as flippant. It's a slow burn, with spice coming in the 2nd half of the book. A good read.

cute, wish there was more character growth but definitely sweet
Format: Kindle
Serenity was abused by her parents when she presented as an omega and sold off to someone who starved, assaulted and made her do questionable things while he waited for her heat to come. In a desperate attempt at getting free she was able to run away and was hit with a pack who ended up being a scent match. While this story was sweet I wanted to see some development of Serenity and Remy’s characters. Serenity was abused and forced to do things from an alpha’s bark, I wanted to see her growth from that but it was basically night and day. Same with Remy, he just miraculously had an aha moment and that was it. Overall a sweet story.

so engaging
Format: Kindle
Start to finish, I was hooked. The imagery, the emotion, the drama, and the real world application all linked perfectly together with the healing power of love, and compassion. If you never give up hope, all things will work out in your favor. Thanks Serenity for being so strong and resilient. Thanks AJ Shirley for your amazing work. On to book two!
