Big Thief's sixth studio album, Double Infinity, was released on September 5, 2025, through 4AD. Produced and mixed by longtime collaborator Dom Monks, the album was recorded as a live band over three weeks at the Power Station in New York City. It is the band's first album without bassist and founding member Max Oleartchik, who departed in 2024, with the remaining members recording as a core three-piece.
The band wrote 50 to 60 songs in preparation and initially planned a heavy rock album before abandoning that concept for a more collaborative approach. Ten session musicians contributed to the recording, including additional drummer Jon Nellen, backing vocalists Alena Spanger, Hannah Cohen, and June McDoom, and ambient pioneer Laraaji. Lead vocalist Adrianne Lenker described the album as "shouting from the mountain, these deepest things, all the way into the sky, and all the way into the core of the earth."
Double Infinity received widespread critical acclaim, earning a Metacritic score of 84/100 indicating "universal acclaim." Uncut gave it 9/10, while Record Collector awarded it five stars. Robert Christgau praised it as a triumph of "shameless beauty," highlighting drummer James Krivchenia as the "hero" of the album. The album appeared on numerous year-end lists, including number 4 on Mojo's best albums of 2025.
